Education Administration Program Overview

The program aims at enabling participants to understand and critique theories and practices of educational management in light of current research and professional experience. It provides competencies for dealing with cross-cultural challenges in education management and equips students with equitable ways of leadership awareness as well as strategies and operational know-how to realize visions and abilities needed to lead teams and staff to specific goals. The course will develop individual leadership skills and competencies as well as the capacity to lead and manage change.

The program aims to give students an advanced understanding of current management, leadership, and pedagogical issues and challenges of the educational sector as well as the ability to take a global perspective in tackling management issues in education. The integration of theory and practical cases based on contemporary educational problems is a central teaching strategy of the course that allows graduates to fulfill management functions in all education-related organizations.

A graduate’s enhanced knowledge of educational issues and specialist areas of interest will be attractive to a wide range of employers. The course prepares future leaders to work on managerial positions in the fields of secondary and higher education on a national or international level. Moreover, the program will enable them to work in government and non-governmental organizations working on educational issues, as well as in private consulting and training organizations and further academic study at the Ph.D. level.

Teaching Process Characteristics:

The course has a taught and a research component. It may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The taught component comprises 11 core and 4 elective modules every 6 ECTS. The dissertation semester is research-based. The full-time, two years option requires students to complete the taught modules in three semesters, five modules each, and a research-based dissertation in the fourth semester. The part-time option allows students to undertake the taught component over a two-and-a-half-year period, with a minimum of three modules in a semester.

This is followed by a semester-long research component. Each module generally requires students to attend classes on a weekly basis: one meeting a week in each module. Every session consists of two 60 minute classes. Some courses might be offered in a more intensive manner: daily for two weeks. Independent learning, at the personal as well as group/collaborative level, is actively encouraged. The transfer of knowledge into practical competencies and vice versa is achieved by bringing real-life problems into training discussions which are then lead to solutions.

In addition at least once in a semester, with a pre-determined schedule, students will visit one of the following organizations: the ministry of education and science of Georgia, organizations that operate under the Ministry, higher education institutions, schools, non-governmental organizations, or others. The aim of the visit is to get knowledge about the practical implementation of education management issues in each type of educational institution. On the seminar to follow the visit, students will offer their vision regarding the existing management drawbacks in the host institution and possible solutions to them.

The seminar reports will be based on the models taught in the core courses of the relevant semester. The classes consist of small groups of students, which allows professors to devote more time to individual work with them. Moreover, academic support is provided to students, through consultations. In addition to the regular lectures for the modules, there could be short presentations or seminars by visiting scholars. Students are advised to participate in all sessions organized by the faculty. Students are also encouraged to organize their own presentations among the group. If you require any help, you are encouraged to contact the program coordinators at UG.
