Destinations and Itineraries
Practical answers for choosing and arranging Georgian destinations: Tbilisi, Batumi, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Kutaisi, Borjomi and mountain regions.
What is the best destination to start with in Georgia?
For a first visit, Tbilisi is usually the easiest start. It has the airport, services, hotels and food options, and works as a base for Mtskheta, Kakheti, Kazbegi or Borjomi. We start there because it makes the first day calmer and the plan clearer.
Is Batumi necessary in every itinerary?
No. Batumi is strong for summer, seaside mood and lighter walks on the boulevard, but it is not mandatory for a short trip. If days are limited, Tbilisi with mountains or Kakheti may be better than a long seaside transfer.
When should I choose Kazbegi or Gudauri?
Choose Kazbegi for mountains, cooler air and wide landscapes. Gudauri is stronger in winter for snow, and can also be a beautiful stop toward Kazbegi in other seasons. Mountain routes need flexibility, so weather and road conditions must be checked before final details.
What is the difference between Kakheti and Kutaisi?
Kakheti is eastern Georgia: countryside, vineyards, calmer villages like Sighnaghi, Telavi and Kvareli. Kutaisi is western Georgia: caves, canyons and softer nature such as Prometheus, Martvili and Okatse. The question is not which is prettier, but which fits your route.
Should I visit Borjomi or Bakuriani?
Borjomi suits forests, mineral water and relaxed walking, often as a softer stop between cities. Bakuriani is stronger for families, snow and mountain mood, especially in winter. Sometimes we combine them, and sometimes one is enough.
Are Svaneti and Mestia suitable for a first trip?
Svaneti is beautiful, but it needs time and comfort with longer routes. We do not add Mestia to a short trip only because the photos are strong. If the traveler loves deep mountains and has enough days, Svaneti becomes one of Georgia's best choices.
How should I arrange 7 days in Georgia?
In 7 days, do not chase every city. Usually we build a Tbilisi base, add Mtskheta or Kakheti, and choose one mountain or Borjomi day depending on season. If Batumi is added, the trip becomes more active and less relaxed.
How should I arrange 10 to 12 days?
This allows a wider route: Tbilisi, Kakheti or Kazbegi, then western Georgia such as Kutaisi and Batumi, with a rest or nature day. It suits families because transfers can be softer instead of forcing too many cities.
Are historical destinations worth visiting?
Yes, depending on traveler style. Mtskheta is easy and close to Tbilisi. Vardzia, Akhaltsikhe and Uplistsikhe need clearer planning because they are farther or require longer days. History works best when placed correctly.
Should I choose destinations from photos only?
Photos help, but they are not enough. Some places look amazing but may be tiring to reach or unsuitable for a child or a traveler who dislikes walking. At Orient Cities, we choose by photo, season, route and the people traveling with you.
